Brazil: Area available under cane cultivation exceeds 8.9 million hectares in 2025-26
Brazil’s sugarcane area exceeds 8.9 million hectares, with 57.5% concentrated in São Paulo, highlighting its dominance. Despite being the top global producer, significant untapped land in other states offers expansion potential, supporting future growth in sugar and ethanol production.
Satellite imagery has shown that sugarcane cultivation in Brazil remains concentrated in its centre-south region, with the area available for harvest in the 2025/26 season exceeding 8.9 million hectares, UkrAgroConsult reported.
Data released by Serasa Experian indicates that as of April 2, about 57.5 per cent of this area is located in São Paulo. The remaining 42.5 per cent is spread across Goiás, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul.
São Paulo continues to dominate sugarcane production, with 36 per cent of its 14.1 million hectares of agricultural land under the crop. In comparison, sugarcane occupies only 5 to 6 per cent of the available farmland in Goiás, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul, even though these states together have between 13.6 million and 20 million hectares of suitable land.
Commenting on the data, Diego Santos, Executive Director of Agricultural Solutions at Serasa Experian, said the figures point to significant scope for expansion. He noted that despite Brazil’s position as the world’s largest sugarcane producer and exporter, as well as a leader in biofuel production, there is still room to increase cultivation by using more of the available agricultural land.
Meanwhile, attention is also turning to developments in the Black Sea region, where the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference will be held on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The conference is expected to focus on the future direction of agriculture through 2030, including investment, energy independence, processing and exports of higher-value products.
