Argentina exports over 1 mln tons of sunflower seeds since the start of the year

Argentina exported 1.1 million tonnes of sunflower seeds during January–May 2026, up from 87,000 tonnes a year earlier, mainly to the EU. Sunflower oil exports rose 46% to 777,000 tonnes, while sunflower meal shipments increased to 898,000 tonnes, led by EU demand.

Since the beginning of 2026, Argentina has shipped 1.1 million tons of sunflower seeds, compared to 87,000 tons in January-May 2025, according to Oil World (Germany).

Of this volume, 885,000 tons were shipped to the EU, compared to 65,000 tons a year ago, including 522,000 tons to Bulgaria, 108,000 tons to Spain, 84,000 tons to Portugal, 52,000 tons to France, and 98,000 tons to Romania. Shipments were also made to Turkey – 148,000 tons (1), South Africa – 34,000 tons (0), and the United States – 9,000 tons (4).

Analysts suggest that some of the shipments to Turkey may have actually been re-exported to Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, or other countries in the region.

Argentine sunflower oil exports also significantly exceeded expectations, with 168,000 tons shipped in May. Year-to-date, shipments have increased by 46% year-on-year to 777,000 tons (532,000 tons in January-May 2025), of which 467,000 (223,000 tons) were shipped to India.

Sunflower meal exports from Argentina are proceeding at a brisk pace, with 210,000 tons shipped in May and 898,000 tons in the first five months of this year (534,000 tons in January-May 2025). The main sales destinations were the European Union (604,000 (439,000 tons) and the United Kingdom (149,000 (40,000 tons).
