Bihar signs MoU with IIT Patna and Sugarcane Breeding Institute to modernise sugarcane sector

Bihar’s Sugarcane Industry Department signed MoUs with IIT Patna and the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, to promote research, innovation and technology-driven sugarcane development. The state also launched a sugarcane nursery portal and digital survey campaign, aiming to boost farmer incomes, modernize cultivation and support employment through new sugar mills.

Patna: In a significant move aimed at strengthening Bihar’s sugarcane economy through research, innovation and technology-led development, the state’s sugarcane industry department on Tuesday signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with IIT Patna and the Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI), Coimbatore, at Vikas Bhavan.

The programme was chaired by Sugarcane Industry Minister Sanjay Kumar, who also launched the Sugarcane Nursery Scheme portal developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). During the event, he formally inaugurated the Digital Sugarcane Survey Campaign for areas of the state that do not have sugar mills, The Times of India reported.

Speaking at the event, Sanjay Kumar said the Bihar government remains focused on reviving sugarcane cultivation and improving farmers’ earnings through scientific methods and technology-based solutions.

He said the initiative is intended to make sugarcane farming more profitable, sustainable and driven by modern technology while equipping farmers with improved agricultural practices and tools.

Sugarcane Industry Department Secretary Dharmendra Singh said the establishment of new sugar mills would create employment opportunities and strengthen the economic outlook for farmers across the state.
