El Niño could boost Brazil’s sugarcane growth but disrupt harvest operations, Says Copersucar CEO
El Niño-driven above-average rainfall through August could boost Brazil’s 2026/27 sugarcane crop, according to Copersucar CEO Tomas Manzano. However, weather disruptions may still affect crushing and exports. Copersucar’s 2025/26 sugar sales rose 9% to 17 million tonnes, ethanol sales increased 10% to 21 billion litres, and revenue grew 5.5% to 65.8 billion reais.
The El Niño weather pattern could support stronger sugarcane crop growth in Brazil during the 2026/27 season by bringing above-average rainfall through August, according to Tomas Manzano, Chief Executive Officer of Copersucar, Reuters reported.
Speaking on Tuesday, Manzano said improved rainfall conditions may help increase sugarcane production. However, he cautioned that higher crop availability may not necessarily translate into stronger crushing volumes or smoother exports, as weather-related disruptions could affect operational activities.
Copersucar, the world’s largest sugar trader, reported earlier in the day that its sugar sales for the 2025/26 season rose around 9 per cent year-on-year to reach 17 million metric tonnes.
The company also recorded growth in ethanol business, with sales climbing 10 per cent from the previous season to 21 billion litres.
Revenue for the period increased 5.5 per cent compared with the previous year to 65.8 billion reais (approximately $12.7 billion).
Manzano said the company expects sales growth to continue, supported by expanded trading and operational facilities, a larger sugarcane crop and increasing demand in global markets.
