FDCA tightens checks on misbranded edible oils

The Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) plans to increase surveillance after discovering misbranding cases where palm oil was sold as cottonseed oil. Officials will test samples from misbranded products, and raids have uncovered duplicate and adulterated oils. In response, the FDCA aims to ensure food safety, especially ahead of the festive season, targeting illegal practices and reuse of tins without proper cleaning.

Ahmedabad: The Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) in Gujarat has said it will increase surveillance after recent cases of misbranding of edible oil where palm oil was being sold as cottonseed oil came to light. Officials said samples from such mis-branded packs will be tested.

A top official of a leading edible oil manufacturing company said that there have been instances where they raided some premises along with police to unearth a racket selling duplicate cottonseed oil in South Gujarat.

“There are instances where some traders use stickers of prominent brands on packaging of duplicate and adulterated edible oil to earn higher margins. Cases of palm oil being sold inside tins labelled for cottonseed oil have also come to light.

We have informed various govt authorities regarding this.”H G Koshia, commissioner, Gujarat FDCA, said, “We take all the action to ensure citizens get pure food products. Ahead of the festival season, we will increase surveillance.

We have caught people manufacturing mis-branded and adulterated food products like ghee, paneer and edible oil.” Recently, 55 edible oil manufacturers in Gujarat received FSSAI notices for reusing tin for packaging.

A directive, based on the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation of 2018, states that “tin containers once used shall not be reused for packaging of food” and aims to prevent potential hazards when tins are reused without proper cleaning or repurposing.
