GVMC Commissioner visits biogas plant at Kapuluppada
GVMC Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar inspected the Kapuluppada biogas plant and dumping yard, urging improvements in waste management and safety for ragpickers. He recommended better vehicle access to the plant and clearing garbage at the yard. Visiting Timmapuram, he addressed residents’ concerns on water supply and street lighting, assuring prompt action to improve local services.
Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar visited the Kapuluppada dumping yard and biogas plant on Friday to assess operations and address ongoing concerns, reported The Hindu.
At the biogas plant, Sampath Kumar reviewed the plant’s operations and spoke with K.S. Raja of Vyzag Bio Energy Fuel Private Limited, the company managing the facility. Raja explained that the plant has a processing capacity of 850 to 1,000 kg of waste per day, primarily using municipal wet waste, including food and vegetable scraps from hotels, restaurants, and canteens. He noted that the byproducts of the process include Liquid Fermenter Organic Manure (LFOM) and solid fermented organic manure. Sampath Kumar suggested adding a ramp for better vehicle access to the plant and also visited the compost pits on site.
As per the media report, Later, during his inspection of the nearby dumping yard, the GVMC Commissioner raised concerns about piles of garbage that had yet to be cleared. He instructed staff to promptly move the waste to the waste-to-energy plant. During his visit, he spoke with ragpickers and advised them to wear protective gloves and boots while handling the waste. He also directed the Engineering Department to set up a material recovery facility (MRF) to support the ragpickers in their work.
Earlier in the day, Sampath Kumar visited Timmapuram in Ward 4, accompanied by Corporator D. Yedukondala Rao, to address local issues. Residents raised concerns about the drinking water supply, the need for additional water tanks and borewells, and several defunct street lights. The Commissioner assured that these issues would be addressed promptly.
