India launches crude sunflower oil futures

MCX has launched crude sunflower oil futures to help India’s vegetable oil industry hedge price risks amid heavy import dependence. The cash-settled contracts will be quoted on an ex-Tank JNPT basis, providing importers, refiners, processors and traders with an exchange-based mechanism to manage sunflower oil price exposure.

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has expanded its agricultural derivatives portfolio with the launch of crude sunflower oil futures contracts. The new instrument was unveiled at the Global Commodity Conclave 2026 and is designed to help participants in India’s vegetable oil market manage price risks.

The contracts will be cash-settled, with no physical delivery, and prices will be quoted on an ex-Tank JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) basis, excluding applicable taxes. MCX said the new contract is expected to provide a transparent and efficient exchange-traded mechanism for managing price exposure and support the development of India’s domestic vegetable oil market.

The new instrument will be available to importers, refiners, processors, traders and other participants across the supply chain. Its launch is particularly relevant given India’s heavy reliance on imports: annual crude sunflower oil consumption is around 3 mln tons, of which approximately 2.8 mln tons are imported. Sunflower oil accounts for about 9% of India’s total vegetable oil consumption.

India’s overall vegetable oil demand stands at around 26–27 mln tons per year, with more than 60% of requirements met through imports. This leaves the domestic market highly sensitive to fluctuations in global prices and changes in international supply. MCX also noted that prices across the vegetable oil complex are closely interconnected, influencing substitution patterns and the relative competitiveness of sunflower oil.

The new contract will allow market participants to hedge sunflower oil price risks directly on an Indian exchange. Crude sunflower oil futures join MCX’s existing agricultural portfolio, which already includes contracts for cotton, cardamom and mentha oil.
