Indonesia targets E20 ethanol blend by 2029

Indonesia plans to implement a 20% ethanol fuel blend (E20) by 2029, up from the current E5 mandate, to strengthen energy security. The government will expand domestic sugarcane and cassava feedstock production, while citing B50 biodiesel as a successful import-reduction model.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is targeting the implementation of a 20 percent ethanol fuel blend (E20) by 2029 to bolster national energy security.

“We expect to implement the 20 percent ethanol blend by 2029,” Deputy for Energy and Mineral Resources Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Elen Setiadi said during the MINDialogue event in Jakarta on Wednesday (Aug 12).

He explained that the current bioethanol blending mandate in domestic gasoline is set at five percent (E5).

To meet the expanded E20 mandate, the government plans to increase ethanol feedstock production using domestic agricultural commodities such as sugarcane and cassava.

A key source of molasses for the program is expected to come from newly developed food estate projects, including large-scale agricultural developments in Papua.

Elen emphasized that building a strong energy ecosystem is essential to accelerating national industrialization and ensuring the sustainability of the industrial sector.

“The President’s directive under the Asta Cita program is clear: energy security is a crucial foundation, followed by industrial downstreaming,” he said.

Addressing global geopolitical developments, particularly ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, he said that international volatility provided an important lesson for Indonesia to strengthen the management of its natural resources and reduce its energy vulnerabilities.

Elen pointed to the national biodiesel 50 (B50) program as a successful example of efforts to strengthen energy security, noting that the initiative has effectively reduced Indonesia’s dependence on imported diesel fuel.

In addition to long-term renewable energy programs, the government remains committed to maintaining energy affordability through subsidized fuels, including diesel fuel and Pertalite.

“The President has guaranteed that the prices of subsidized fuels, both diesel and Pertalite, will remain at their current levels until the end of the year,” he said.
