Japan’s rice stockpiles projected to grow

Japan’s 2026 staple rice harvest is forecast at just over 7.4 million tonnes, down more than 60,000 tonnes year-on-year due to prolonged rain and limited sunlight. Despite being the decade’s second-largest harvest, production will exceed demand, further increasing already record-high rice inventories.

Japan’s agriculture ministry says the country’s 2026 harvest of staple rice is expected to be just over 7.4 million tons.

The estimate, as of September 25th, is down by more than 60,000 tons from last year. The ministry cites prolonged rain and lack of sunlight for the drop.

Even so, the projected harvest is the second-largest in the past decade. It also far exceeds expected demand.

Rice inventories are already at a record high, and a further increase now appears unavoidable.
