Maharashtra: 117 sugar mills owe cane dues worth Rs 2,130 crore

Maharashtra sugar mills still owe ₹2,130 crore in cane dues, with only 92 of 209 mills clearing full FRP payments. Despite most payments being made, delays persist across many mills, raising concerns over farmer liquidity and timely settlements after the crushing season.

Kolhapur: As many as 117 sugar mills in Maharashtra owe cane dues worth Rs 2,130 crore, even as the crushing season in the state has concluded. Out of the total 209 mills that participated in crushing operations this season, only 92 have cleared the full Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) to farmers, according to data released by the Maharashtra Sugar Commissionerate.

According to the data, 117 of the 209 mills have not fully cleared FRP dues to farmers.

The latest FRP report shows that as of April 15, 2026, payments were calculated for sugarcane crushed up to March 31, with payments recorded up to April 14. By then, 209 mills had crushed about 1,042.27 lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane, generating total dues of Rs 40,327 crore.

Out of this, mills have paid Rs 38,197 crore so far, including harvesting and transportation charges, while the remaining amount is still pending.

Among the mills, 84 have cleared between 80% and 99% of dues, while 23 mills have paid between 60% and 79%. Another 10 mills have paid less than 60% of the dues. Overall, 139 mills account for the pending Rs 2,130 crore owed to farmers.
