Maharashtra: 190 mills operational in ongoing season; sugar production reaches 29.15 lakh tonnes

In the 2024-25 sugar season, 190 mills are crushing sugarcane, 14 fewer than last season. By December 30, 338.94 lakh tonnes of sugarcane had been crushed, producing 291.52 lakh quintals of sugar. Sugar recovery is at 8.6%, lower than last season’s 8.9%. Regional divisions show varying recovery rates, with Kolhapur leading at 10.13%.

In the ongoing 2024-25 sugar season, 190 mills are engaged in sugarcane crushing operations, which is 14 less than during the same period in the previous season. As of December 30, statewide sugar mills have crushed 338.94 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, lower than the 430.43 lakh tonnes crushed during the same period last season. Sugar production has reached 291.52 lakh quintals (29.15 lakh tonnes), down from 383.01 lakh quintals in the previous season. The state’s overall sugar recovery rate stands at 8.6%, lower than last season’s rate of 8.9% during the same period, according to the Sugar Commissionerate report.

In the Pune division, 84.64 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 73.68 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.71%. This division has 31 mills operating, comprising 18 cooperative mills and 13 private mills.

The Kolhapur division, with 39 operational mills (26 cooperative and 13 private), has crushed 78.59 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 79.63 lakh quintals of sugar. This division has recorded the highest recovery rate in the state, at 10.13%.

In Solapur, 41 mills are operational, including 16 cooperative mills and 25 private mills. These mills have processed 59.32 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 45.21 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.62%.

The Ahmednagar division has 25 mills in operation, with 15 cooperative mills and 10 private mills. These mills have crushed 43.19 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 34.37 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.96%.

In Nanded, 28 mills, comprising 9 cooperative and 19 private mills, have crushed 38.84 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 33.74 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.69%. In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 19 mills (11 cooperative and 8 private) have crushed 30.08 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, to produce 21.6 lakh quintals of sugar.

In the Amravati division, 4 sugar mills have started operations, including 1 cooperative and 3 private mills. These mills have crushed 3.67 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 2.99 lakh quintals of sugar. In Nagpur division, three sugar mills have started the crushing operations.
