Maharashtra: Kolhapur jaggery price falls Rs 1,600 per quintal as demand weakens
Jaggery prices at Kolhapur APMC fell sharply by ₹1,600 to an average ₹6,000 per quintal on Wednesday from ₹7,800 on August 22. Weaker demand from Gujarat and declining sugar prices pressured rates, despite strong arrivals of around 11,000 lots and producers seeking higher prices.
Kolhapur: Jaggery prices at the Kolhapur Agricultural Produce Market Committee fell sharply by Rs 1,600 per quintal on Wednesday, with the average price declining to Rs 6,000 amid weaker demand from Gujarat and falling sugar prices in the market.
Around 11,000 lots of jaggery arrived at the market on Wednesday. The average price had risen to Rs 7,800 per quintal in Saturday’s auction, held on August 22.
The higher prices had led to supplies being sent to markets in Gujarat, but demand weakened after the sharp increase. This affected trading at the Kolhapur market on Monday.
Jaggery producers remained firm on their demand for higher prices. As a result, traders did not buy jaggery during Monday’s auction, leaving the produce at the market committee.
Trading resumed on Wednesday morning. However, reduced demand from Gujarat, along with a decline in sugar prices, put pressure on jaggery prices. The average rate subsequently fell to Rs 6,000 per quintal.
