Maharashtra sugar mills clear Rs 369 crore FRP dues after warning from Sugar Commissioner

Maharashtra sugar mills have paid ₹369 crore to sugarcane farmers within two weeks after strict action by the Sugar Commissionerate over pending FRP dues for the 2025–26 season. Pending dues dropped below ₹1,000 crore to ₹934 crore, while 127 mills cleared full payments and overall FRP disbursal reached 97.69%.

Pune: Sugar mills in Maharashtra have paid Rs 369 crore to sugarcane farmers within a fortnight after strict directions from the Sugar Commissionerate over pending Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) dues for the 2025-26 crushing season.

According to the latest report available till May 15, pending FRP dues in the state have now fallen below Rs 1,000 crore for the first time this season. Farmers are currently yet to receive around Rs 934 crore from 83 sugar mills, while 127 mills have cleared 100 percent of their FRP payments, Pudhari reported.

Sugar Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Kolte had conducted hearings on May 11 involving 39 sugar mills that still had pending FRP dues. At that time, 96 sugar factories collectively owed nearly Rs 1,303 crore to farmers. During the hearings, several mills sought additional time to clear the dues. The Commissioner had warned that seizure action would be initiated if payments were not made within the given deadline.

Following the warning, sugar mills deposited Rs 369 crore directly into farmers’ bank accounts. Authorities also confirmed that 13 sugar mills have since cleared their entire FRP liability.

Data from the Sugar Commissionerate showed that by the end of April, sugar mills across Maharashtra had crushed nearly 10.45 crore tonnes of sugarcane. Including harvesting and transportation charges, the total FRP payable to farmers stood at Rs 40,446 crore.

Out of this amount, mills have already transferred Rs 39,512 crore, or 97.69 percent of the total dues, into farmers’ bank accounts. The remaining unpaid amount now stands at Rs 934 crore with 83 sugar factories.

Yashwant Giri, Director of Finance at the Sugar Commissionerate in Pune, said the department is continuing its follow-up efforts to ensure the remaining dues are cleared at the earliest.
