Maharashtra: Sugar production reaches 25 lakh tonnes; 189 mills operational in ongoing season

In Maharashtra’s 2024-25 sugar season, 189 mills have crushed 295.17 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 25 lakh tonnes of sugar with an average recovery rate of 8.47%. Kolhapur leads with a 9.98% recovery rate, followed by Pune (8.57%) and Nanded (8.55%). Solapur has the most mills (41), but a lower recovery rate of 7.49%.

In the ongoing 2024-25 sugar season, 189 mills have started sugarcane crushing operations, according to the Sugar Commissionerate report. As of December 25, 295.17 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed by mills in the state, producing 250.06 lakh quintals (25 lakh tonnes) of sugar, with an average sugar recovery rate of 8.47%.

In the Pune division, 74.59 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 63.96 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 8.57%. This division has 31 mills operating, comprising 18 cooperative mills and 13 private mills.

The Kolhapur division, with 39 operational mills (26 cooperative and 13 private), has crushed 68.06 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 67.92 lakh quintals of sugar. This division has recorded the highest recovery rate in the state, at 9.98%.

In Solapur, 41 mills are operational, including 16 cooperative mills and 25 private mills. These mills have processed 51.61 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 38.65 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.49%.

The Ahmednagar division has 25 mills in operation, with 15 cooperative mills and 10 private mills. These mills have crushed 37.44 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 29.3 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.83%.

In Nanded, 28 mills, comprising 9 cooperative and 19 private mills, have crushed 33.74 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 28.84 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.55%. In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 19 mills (11 cooperative and 8 private) have crushed 26.3 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, to produce 18.68 lakh quintals of sugar.

In the Amravati division, 4 sugar mills have started operations, including 1 cooperative and 3 private mills. These mills have crushed 3.16 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 2.54 lakh quintals of sugar. In Nagpur division, two sugar mills have started the crushing operations.
