NFCSF estimates 270 lakh tonnes of sugar production in 2024-25 season
Sugar production in India for the 2024-25 season is lower than last year, with a revised estimate of 270 lakh tonnes. As of January 15, 2025, 507 mills have crushed 1482.14 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 130.55 lakh tonnes of sugar. The average recovery rate stands at 8.81%, down from 9.37% in the previous season.
With sugar mills continuing operations in India during the 2024-25 season, sugarcane crushing and sugar production are lower compared to the previous season. Meanwhile, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF) has also reduced its projection for sugar production.
According to the NFCSF, sugar production for the 2024-25 season is estimated to reach 270 lakh tonnes, lower than the previous estimate of 280 lakh tonnes. In the previous season, sugar production was 319 lakh tonnes.
Sugar production in India has dropped by 20.65 lakh tonnes compared to the previous season. According to data released by NFCSF, as of January 15, 2025, crushing for the 2024-25 season is underway in 507 sugar mills across the country. A total of 1482.14 lakh tonnes of sugarcane has been crushed, resulting in the production of 130.55 lakh tonnes of sugar. In comparison, during the same period in the previous season, 524 sugar mills had crushed 1612.83 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 151.20 lakh tonnes of sugar.
The sugar recovery rate in the country is lower than in the previous season. As of January 15, 2025, the average sugar recovery rate stands at 8.81%, compared to 9.37% during the same period in the previous season.
In terms of state-wise sugar production, 196 mills in Maharashtra have crushed 489.20 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 43.05 lakh tonnes of sugar.
In Uttar Pradesh, more sugar mills have commenced crushing operations this season. A total of 122 sugar mills have crushed 473.48 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 42.85 lakh tonnes of sugar. In Karnataka, the third-largest sugar-producing state, three more sugar mills are operating compared to the previous season. Currently, 77 sugar mills are in operation, up from 74 mills during the same period last season. Sugar production in the state has reached 27.10 lakh tonnes after crushing 318.82 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.
This season, sugar factories in Karnataka and Maharashtra started late. Additionally, reports indicate that in Uttar Pradesh, red rot disease has reduced yields.
