Punjab : Mohali takes guard against pink stem borer infestation in wheat crop
The Chief Agriculture Officer of Mohali has directed a survey of villages in Kharar block due to reports of pink stem borer infestation in early-sown wheat. While no infestation was found in the villages surveyed, monitoring continues. Pink stem borer, though not a primary pest, can affect wheat, especially in early fallow fields. Recommendations for control include applying fipronil or chlorpyrifos before irrigation and chlorantraniliprole after irrigation if infestations are found.
Mohali: The chief agriculture officer (CAO) of Mohali has directed inspection of various villages in the Kharar block following reports of a pink stem borer infestation in early-sown wheat fields. Continuous monitoring is underway as ordered by CAO Mohali Dr Gurmail Singh.Agriculture officer Kharar Shubhkaran Singh Dhaliwal, ADO Mandeep Kaur, AEO Ajay Sharma, and Karanvir Singh Mahal conducted a survey in the villages of Nadiali, Alipur, Popna, Dhadak Kalan, and Deh Kalan. No infestation was observed in these villages.They noted that while pink bollworm and soldier bollworm are not primary pests of wheat crops, these insects can occasionally affect wheat due to certain sowing techniques and seasonal variations, particularly in fields using Happy Seeder, Super Seeder, or mulching methods.The pink stem borer creates a cavity in the stem above the wheat root and consumes the inner sap, leading to yellowing and desiccation of the affected plants or branches. The likelihood of infestation increases in early fallow fields as temperatures decline.
Reduced temperatures diminish pest activity. For substantial bollworm infestations, apply a mixture of 7 kg fipronil 0.3% or one litre of chlorpyrifos 20 EC with 20 kg soil before the initial irrigation, preferably during daylight. For post-irrigation infestations, apply 50 ml chlorantraniliprole dissolved in 80 to 100 litres of water for effective control.
