Russia ships wheat to Iran from Caspian ports for the first time in eight years

Russia resumed grain exports via the Caspian Sea in Q1 2026, including first wheat shipments to Iran in years. Exports totaled significant volumes of corn, barley, and wheat, marking a shift from Black Sea routes and a notable increase compared to minimal shipments in 2025.

Russia in Q1 2026 for the first time in many years shipped wheat to Iran via the Caspian Sea, Reuters reports, citing data from the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the ministry, in January-March this year Russian Caspian ports shipped 500,000 tons of feed corn, 180,000 tons of feed barley, and more than 4,000 tons of milling wheat.

“Caspian ports had not received export wheat for more than eight years, all flows went through the Black Sea, Novorossiysk,” said Alexander Sharov, head of the consulting company RusIranExpo.

In particular, in March Russia exported 300,000 tons of grain via the Caspian Sea, compared with almost no shipments in March 2025.
