Spring is coming: Argentine wheat fields need more rain, exchange says

BUENOS AIRES, Sept 12 (Reuters) -Argentine wheat fields need more rainfall in the coming weeks, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange said on Thursday, noting that dry weather has harmed the crop in some western areas as the southern hemisphere’s spring fast approaches.
Argentina, a major world supplier of wheat, has sown some 6.3 million hectares (15.6 million acres) of the crop for the current 2024/25 season, the exchange said in a weekly report.
“The areas that did not receive rain (over recent weeks) are beginning to enter critical stages of sub-optimal conditions,” it added.
Meanwhile, Argentina’s most important wheat areas in the country’s agricultural heartland as well as in southern Buenos Aires province have received sufficient rain over the past month, according to the exchange.
The South American country’s spring begins on Sept. 21, and farmers begin harvesting wheat in November.
