Sri Lanka : ‘Surplus Nadu will ensure no rice shortage for next four months’
Sri Lanka has sufficient white and red Nadu rice stocks to meet demand for four months, preventing shortages. The government will establish two mills in Anuradhapura and Ampara to purchase 300,000 metric tons of wet paddy and plans to increase Keeri Samba production by 50%.
Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that since there is a surplus of white and red Nadu rice sufficient for four months, no rice shortage will occur in the country for the next four months, regardless of what disaster strikes.
The Minister also said that steps will be taken to establish two mills in the Anuradhapura and Ampara districts capable of purchasing 300,000 metric tons of wet paddy.
Minister Samarasinghe made these remarks on Saturday (20) while participating in the commencement ceremony of the project to develop and carpet a 2.2 km stretch of the Anuradhapura – Eppawala – Nellikulama road.
The amount estimated by the Government for this project is Rs. 113 million.
Speaking further, Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe stated the following: “After the current Government came into power, steps were taken to uplift agriculture by providing fertiliser subsidies to farmers. The Government is taking steps to purchase white and red Nadu paddy at Rs. 120 per kilogram. Strengthening the paddy purchasing process, we plan to establish two mills capable of purchasing 300,000 metric tons of wet paddy in the Anuradhapura and Ampara districts, where paddy is produced heavily.
“To avert a Keeri Samba shortage in the country, we are working to increase Keeri Samba production by fifty percent. The country is currently moving along a positive path, and the law is now being enforced against individuals who plundered public property.”
