Tamil Nadu: Sugarcane crushing begins at Arignar Anna Sugar Mills

The Arignar Anna Sugar Mills in Kurungulam commenced its crushing season, aiming to process 1.50 lakh tonnes of sugarcane from 4,800 acres. Thanjavur Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam announced plans to expand cultivation for 2 lakh tonnes next year. Farmers, officials, and mill executives attended the inauguration, highlighting the mill’s support for Thanjavur and Pudukottai farmers.

Thanjavur: The Arignar Anna Sugar Mills at Kurungulam is set to crush 1.50 lakh tonnes of sugarcane this year, according to Thanjavur District Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam.

Inaugurating the crushing operations on Friday, the collector said sugarcane has been cultivated on 4,800 acres and registered for crushing at the mill. “Steps will be taken to increase the sugarcane cultivation area next year so that two lakh tonnes of cane will be crushed,” she added. Crushing began earlier this year in response to farmers’ requests.

Ravichandran, Chief Executive Officer of the mills, G. Kavitha, Joint Director of Agriculture, and sugarcane farmers, including Govindaraj, Ramanathan, and Durai Bhaskar, participated. Pujas were performed before the crushing started.

The state-owned sugar mill continue to process sugarcane supplied by farmers from Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts.
