Tanzania : Farm clinic for sugarcane growers to up sugar production

Researchers from the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) are conducting a nine-day farm clinic for sugarcane farmers in Kilombero, Morogoro region. The clinic, running from October 17 to 25, aims to address challenges in sugarcane production and introduce new technologies. Sponsored by IUCN, it involves 800 farmers and seeks to improve income and profits through enhanced practices.

MOROGORO: RESEARCHERS from the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) in Kibaha, Coast Region are conducting a nine-day farm clinic to the sugarcane farmers from the four zones of Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) in Kilombero, Morogoro region.

This is part of preparations for the expansion of production at the Kilombero Sugar Company.

The four zones are Nyange, Msolwa Ujamaa, Katurukila and Mang’ula.

The clinic which started from the 17th of October expects to end on the 25th October, is conducted in collaboration with the farmers, the Kilombero Sugar Company and Ifakara Town Council.

According to Dr Nessie Luambano- TARI Manager for Kibaha Centre, the clinic which is being sponsored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) targets at reaching out to the large number of farmers especially the new ones so as to solve challenges facing sugarcane production which will result into increasing income and profit to the farmers.

She stated that the clinic also aims at providing different technologies which have been innovated by the researchers to the sugarcane farmers who work along Kilombero valley area.

“Different farmers have responded well to the exercise and they have opportunity to share a number of challenges which are related to the availability of quality seeds, soil fertility, uses of fertilisers, how to deal with pests and diseases,” she said.

She added that a total of 800 farmers, which is equal to 200 farmers from each zone, are expected to be reached out.
