Uttar Pradesh: Process regarding sugarcane price is ongoing, says Minister

On Chaudhary Charan Singh’s birth anniversary, Uttar Pradesh’s Cabinet Minister Chaudhary Lakshmi Narayan addressed concerns over sugarcane prices. He mentioned that a sub-committee, led by the Cane Commissioner, had already discussed the issue, with a meeting by the Chief Secretary scheduled soon. Farmers have been demanding a price hike as the 2024-25 crushing season begins. On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Chaudhary Charan Singh, Uttar Pradesh’s Cabinet Minister Chaudhary Lakshmi Narayan addressed the ongoing issue of sugarcane pricing, offering hope to farmers about an increase in the crop price.

In response to questions regarding sugarcane prices, the Minister stated that a sub-committee, led by the Cane Commissioner, had already met to discuss the issue. A further meeting, chaired by the Chief Secretary, is scheduled to take place soon. The process regarding the sugarcane price is ongoing, reported Amar Ujala.

Earlier in the assembly, he mentioned that full efforts are being made to ensure farmers receive a fair price for sugarcane, and that this process is currently underway.

This announcement has sparked optimism among sugarcane farmers, many of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the current price. Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been demanding a SAP (State Advisory Price/Sugarcane price) hike as new crushing season for 2024-25 commenced in Uttar Pradesh.

During his address, the Minister also paid tribute to Chaudhary Charan Singh, praising his legacy as a champion of farmers’ rights. “Chaudhary Charan Singh was known as the ‘farmer’s Messiah,’ and it is in his spirit that we continue to fight for the welfare of the farming community,” Narayan remarked.

The issue of sugarcane prices has gained significant attention in recent months, as farmers across the state express growing concerns over escalating input costs. The final decision on the sugarcane price is expected to have a direct impact on the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in Uttar Pradesh, a key sugarcane-producing state in India.
