UNICA: Ethanol Production, Sales Up During First Half Of December

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced that sugarcane processing and ethanol production were up significantly during the first half of December. Ethanol sales were also up during the two-week period. 

Mills in the south-central region of Bazil processed 19.08 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first half of December, up 244.29 percent when compared to the same period of 2022. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, 2023, reached 638.39 million metric tons, up 18.29 percent when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. 

According to UNICA, mills in the region produced 1.02 billion liters (269.46 million gallons) of ethanol during the two-week period, up 113.69 percent when compared to the same period of the previous year. Production included 681.03 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 225.48 percent, and 269.89 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 27.02 percent. Corn ethanol accounted for 281.09 million liters, or 27 percent of production, up 41.01 percent when compared to the same period of 2022.

Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 30.87 billion liters, up 13.65 percent when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. Production included 18.4 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 17.57 percent, and 12.48 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 8.32 percent. Corn ethanol accounted for 4.33 billion liters of production, up 41.92 percent. 

Mills in the south-central region sold 1.43 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of December, up 25.9 percent when compared to the same period of the previous year. Sales included 949.15 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 50.25 percent, and 479.17 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 4.69 percent.

Domestic sales of hydrous ethanol reached 926.78 million liters during the first half of December, up 55.99 percent, with domestic sales of anhydrous ethanol at 466.59 million liters, down 2.58 percent. 

Total sales since the beginning of the current harvest season were at 22.47 billion liters, up 6.91 percent. Sales included 13.36 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 9.6 percent, and 9.12 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 3.19 percent.
