Chandigarh: Despite claims by the state govt that the lifting of wheat in grain markets had been streamlined, only 27.89 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of the total 86.86 LMT of wheat arrived in the mandis has been lifted so far.
As on Saturday, the state agencies and private traders have procured 81.38 LMT of wheat in the state, of which 4.59 LMT has been procured by private traders.
According to the food and supplies department, 8.39 LMT of wheat arrived in the grain markets on Saturday and the day’s procurement was 8.95 LMT. So far, Rs 11,480 crore has been released to the farmers as payment. On Friday, 11.66 LMT wheat had arrived in the state mandis. The state govt has set a target of procuring 132 LMT of wheat during the ongoing procurement season. However,
with harvesting picking up in many districts, the sudden increase in the arrival of stocks has exposed the lack of proper arrangement in several grain markets. The officials have ruled out any shortage of gunny bags.
The arhtiyas are, however, facing labour shortage in many areas and it is affecting timely lifting of the wheat stocks. tnn
