UNICA reports that sugarcane processing in Brazil’s south-central region dropped by 64.86% in late December compared to 2023, with cumulative processing down 4.75% for the season. Ethanol production decreased slightly, supported by a surge in corn ethanol output, which rose 43.92% during the period. Total ethanol production reached 32.42 billion liters this season, up 3.07%, with hydrous ethanol rising 9.8% and anhydrous ethanol falling 6.93%. Ethanol sales increased 2.55% in December, totaling 2.95 billion liters, driven by a 15.54% rise in anhydrous ethanol sales.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing was down significantly during the second half of December. Ethanol production was down only slightly due to high levels of corn ethanol production. Ethanol sales were up during the two-week period.

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 1.3 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of December, down 64.86% when compared to the same period of 2023. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, 2024, reached 613.6 million metric tons, down 4.75%.

Mills in the region produced 485.66 million liters (128.3 million gallons) of ethanol during the two-week period. Production included 301.83 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 15.25% when compared to the same period of 2024, and 183.83 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 6.69%. Corn ethanol accounted for 402.08 million liters, or 82.79% of production during the second half of December, up 43.92%.

Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 32.42 billion liters, up 3.07% when compared to the same period of the previous year. Production included 20.64 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 9.8%, and 11.78 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 6.93%. Corn ethanol accounted for 6.03 billion liters of production, up 30.86%.

Mills in the region sold 2.95 billion liters of ethanol in December, up 2.55% when compared to the same month of 2023. Domestic sales included 1.78 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 1.7%, and 1.04 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 15.54%.

Total sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 26.78 billion liters, up 11.84%. Sales included 17.29 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 20.34%, and 9.49 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 0.92%.
