FCI’s open market sale of wheat and rice to increase availability and control prices
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is selling wheat and rice under the Open Market Sale Scheme for Domestic Purpose (OMSS-D) to enhance market availability and stabilize prices. These sales occur via e-auctions to private traders, flour mills, and state agencies. As per the latest policy revision, the reserve price for rice under OMSS-D remains ₹2,800 per quintal, but transportation costs are no longer included.
Food Corporation of India (FCI) has undertaken the sale of wheat and rice in the open market as per the directions of the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) to increase the availability of wheat and rice in the open market and to control the prices of wheat, rice, and flour.
Under the Open Market Sale Scheme for Domestic Purpose (OMSS-D) scheme,wheat and rice are offloaded by sale through e-auction to flour mills/private traders/bulk buyers/manufactures and also by sale to State governments/UTs and Semi-government and cooperative organizations like NAFED/NCCF/Kendriya Bhandar or Corporations/ Cooperatives/ Federations/ Self-help groups of State governments/UTs, according to the review meeting of FCI chaired by MP Eranna Kadadi here on Thursday.
It was told during the meeting that as per the DFPD policy in September 2024, the reserve price for the sale of rice under the OMSS-D scheme with e-auction was ₹2,800 per quintal plus transportation charges, which was revised to ₹2,800 per quintal without transportation charges by the DFPD policy dated January 7, 2025.
