Ukraine : The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) forecasts an increase in grain harvests in the next two years.
Ukraine’s central bank raised its 2025 grain and legume harvest forecast to 61.5 million tons, while lowering oilseed expectations to 19.3 million tons. Future grain output is projected to grow through higher productivity, but oilseeds face climate and irrigation challenges in southern regions. Livestock output continues to decline excluding poultry.
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) increased its 2025 grain and legume harvest estimate to 61.5 million tons, compared to 57.9 million tons expected in July. At the same time, the oilseed harvest forecast was lowered to 19.3 million tons, compared to 21.0 million tons.
“According to NBU estimates, grain and legume harvests will grow in 2026-2027 thanks to further increases in agricultural productivity and increased plantings of corn and other grain crops in regions with lower climate change impacts,” NBU experts believe.
They add that the yield of oilseed crops, which are concentrated in the southern regions, will be lower due to the negative impact of climate change, exacerbated by the long-term consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station for the region’s irrigation systems.
“The security situation in the frontline regions of the south also continues to impact the situation, worsening conditions for the 2026 harvest and slowing the pace of land demining,” the report also states.
Thus, the NBU has improved its grain harvest forecast for 2026 compared to the July estimate – from 59.6 million tons to 62.9 million tons, for 2027 – from 60.4 million tons to 63.5 million tons. The gross oilseed harvest next year is expected to be at 21.4 million tons, compared to 22.0 million tons forecast in July, and for 2027 – the estimate has been reduced to 22.2 million tons from the previously expected 22.8 million tons.
At the same time, the livestock sector’s negative contribution to the added value of agriculture is projected to persist due to a further reduction in livestock numbers (excluding poultry farming), the NBU concluded.
