Karnataka: Sugar mill owners will accept govt’s proposal to increase sugarcane price, says CM

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said sugar mill owners are expected to accept the revised procurement price of Rs 3,300 per tonne, with mills and the government each contributing Rs 50. He assured transparent talks on remaining demands and warned action against non-compliant mills. He also sought urgent central compensation for rain-damaged crops across the state.

Davanagere: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday expressed confidence that sugar mill owners would accept the government’s proposal to raise the sugarcane procurement price to Rs. 3,300 per tonne, paving the way for a settlement of the ongoing dispute.

Speaking to reporters during a stopover, Siddaramaiah said mill owners should pay an additional Rs. 50 per tonne to farmers, while the government would contribute a Rs. 50 subsidy. He added that discussions on other farmer demands would be held in their presence to ensure transparency and resolution.

Responding to opposition leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal’s doubts over mill owners’ cooperation, the Chief Minister warned that action would be taken against eerrant sugar mills.

Highlighting the recent agricultural losses, Siddaramaiah noted that crops spread across more than 11 lakh hectares in the state had been damaged by rain and urged the Centre to release compensation without delay.
