30 firms eye Fiji’s sugar mill project; Chinese company offers full funding and advanced technology

Thirty parties have shown interest in building a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, Fiji, Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh said. A Chinese firm offered full project funding and advanced technology. The mill will produce sugar, ethanol, and power to boost profitability.

Rakiraki, Fiji: Thirty interested parties have responded to the tender for the establishment of a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, according to Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh.

Singh said several companies had expressed interest in partially funding the project, while others proposed supplying the mill without financial assistance. Among the proposals, a Chinese company had offered both advanced technology and full project funding.

“They want to build a state-of-the-art mill and will also provide the necessary financing,” Singh said.

He added that he would meet with the company and the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) board later this week to finalise discussions.

Although the new mill is unlikely to be completed before the next general election, Singh confirmed that groundwork and preliminary construction would begin soon.

The new facility is expected to produce raw sugar, refined sugar, ethanol, and power, a diversification aimed at maximising profitability and strengthening Fiji’s sugar industry.
