UNICA: Ethanol production, sales continue to trend below last year

Brazil’s UNICA said early-October sugarcane processing rose slightly, but overall seasonal output is still lower. Ethanol production and sales remain below last year, with hydrous ethanol showing the biggest decline. Corn ethanol output increased. Total ethanol production is down 8%, and sales have fallen 2% since the current harvest began.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing was up slightly in early October. Total ethanol production and sales since the beginning of the current harvest season remain down when compared to last year. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 34.04 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first half of October, up from 33.94 million metric tons processed during the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 524.96 million metric tons, down 2.78% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Mills in the region produced 2.01 billion liters (530.99 million gallons) of ethanol during the first half of October. Production included 1.24 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.61% when compared to the same period of last year, and 771.72 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 6.93%. Corn ethanol accounted for 370.56 million liters, or 18.41% of production during the two-week period, up 4.94% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 25.04 billion liters, down 8.23% when compared to the same period of last year. Production included 15.62 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 10.53%, and 9.41 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 4.15%. Corn ethanol accounted for 4.85 billion liters of production, up 17.23% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Mills in the region sold 1.45 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of October. Sales included 559.48 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 5.03%, and 889.11 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 6.74%. 

Domestic sales included 869.9 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.8%, and 559.48 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 5.11%. 

Total sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 18.97 billion liters, down 2.05% when compared to the same period of last year. Sales included 11.87 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.56%, and 7.09 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 4.45%.
