Government fixes 22.5 LMT monthly sugar quota for domestic sale in May 2026
India allocated 22.5 LMT sugar quota for May 2026, slightly lower than April, reflecting softer demand amid West Asia tensions. With crushing season ending and peak consumption tapering before monsoon, markets are expected to stay range-bound as the government closely monitors domestic consumption trends.
In an announcement on April 27, the Food Ministry allocated a monthly sugar quota of 22.5 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for May 2026, which is lower than the quota allocated for April 2026 of 23 LMT but equal to quota allocated for March 2026 which was 22.5 LMT.
In May 2025, the government had allocated a monthly sugar quota of 23.5 LMT for domestic sale.
According to market experts, the lower sugar allocation by the Government for May 2026 compared to the previous month is keeping in mind the likely lower sugar demand catering to the ongoing war situation in West Asia. The sugar consumption usually peaks during April and May, before the monsoon starts. The market is expected to remain range-bound with this quota announcement.
The sugar mills have almost closed crushing operations, hence the Government is cautiously watching the sugar consumption trend in the country.
