UP emerges as India’s sugar and ethanol leader as sugarcane farmers benefit from reforms: Yogi
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the state is India’s top producer of sugar and ethanol, driven by sugarcane-sector reforms and timely farmer payments. The government will establish a seed park in Lucknow and an agricultural university in Kushinagar.
Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the country’s leading producer of sugar and ethanol, driven by reforms in the sugarcane sector, timely payments to farmers and the adoption of modern agricultural practices, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Wednesday.
Addressing a Kharif Producers’ Conference in Gorakhpur, the Chief Minister highlighted the transformation of the state’s farming sector over the past 12 years, with particular emphasis on the progress made in sugarcane cultivation and the ethanol industry, Bharat Samachar reported.
Adityanath said there was a time when farmers struggled to access quality seeds and often failed to receive fair prices for their produce. According to him, these challenges had pushed many cultivators into financial distress.
He said the situation has changed significantly, with sugarcane growers now receiving payments on time and benefiting from government initiatives aimed at strengthening agriculture and increasing farm incomes.
Highlighting the state’s achievements, the Chief Minister said Uttar Pradesh now ranks first in the country in both sugar and ethanol production. He attributed this growth to supportive government policies and the efforts of farmers who have embraced improved farming methods.
The Chief Minister said the government is continuously working to connect farmers with modern technology and advanced agricultural practices. As part of these efforts, an advanced seed park is being established in Lucknow to ensure the availability of quality seeds and improve crop productivity.
He also announced that an agricultural university will be established in Kushinagar to strengthen agricultural education, research and innovation. The institution is expected to help farmers and young people adopt modern cultivation techniques and improve agricultural output.
Emphasising the need to further enhance production, Adityanath said the government’s focus remains on increasing agricultural productivity and ensuring sustained growth in farmers’ earnings.
A large number of farmers attended the event, where they received information on new farming technologies and practices aimed at improving crop yields and strengthening the state’s agriculture sector, including its sugarcane and ethanol value chain.
