Groundnut farmers sought to receive subsidies under NMEO-Oilseeds scheme

The Agriculture Department is encouraging groundnut farmers to leverage NMEO-OS subsidies for certified seeds, bio-fertilizers, micronutrients and biopesticides to boost productivity. By promoting high-yielding, high-oil varieties and improved farming practices, the initiative aims to strengthen oilseed production, enhance farmer incomes and support India’s edible oil self-sufficiency goals.

The Department of Agriculture has urged groundnut farmers in the district to avail themselves of subsidies under the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds (NMEO-OS) to enhance productivity and adopt improved cultivation practices.

A release issued by Joint Director of Agriculture R. Sivakumar said groundnut is cultivated on more than 35,000 acres in the district. The crop is predominantly grown under rainfed conditions in Nambiyur, Bhavanisagar, Perundurai, Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani and Anthiyur blocks, while irrigated cultivation is taken up in all blocks except Thalavadi.

The release said replacing traditional varieties with newly released, high-yielding and high oil-content varieties, along with the use of bio-fertilizers, micronutrient mixtures and biological control agents, would help improve productivity.

Under the scheme, farmers are eligible for subsidies on certified seeds of recently released groundnut varieties, micronutrient mixtures, bio-fertilizers and neem-based biopesticides.

The release appealed to farmers to enrol under the scheme by approaching their nearest Agricultural Extension Centre. It said subsidies would be sanctioned on priority basis and added that farmers who have already received assistance for groundnut under the scheme during the current year would become eligible again only after a gap of two years.
