Bangladesh, Pakistan express desire to extend cooperation in new areas such as sugar industry
Bangladesh Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus and Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif met at the D-8 summit in Cairo, agreeing to strengthen bilateral ties through trade, sports, and cultural exchanges. Pakistan offered technical support for Bangladesh’s sugar mills, while Bangladesh purchased 25,000 tonnes of sugar from Pakistan, set to arrive at Chittagong port from Karachi.
Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt, on the sidelines of the D-8 summit, where they agreed to enhance bilateral relations through increased trade, commerce, and the exchange of sports and cultural delegations.
During the meeting, both leaders expressed their desire to extend cooperation in new areas, such as the sugar industry, according to a spokesperson from the Chief Adviser’s Office, as reported by The Financial Express.
The Pakistani Prime Minister offered technical assistance to help operationalize Bangladesh’s state-run sugar mills by sharing relevant technology.
Professor Yunus highlighted his government’s plans to implement “essential reforms” and hold general elections by mid-2026. He mentioned that he is leading a commission focused on building consensus and initiating dialogue on these reforms.
According to reports, Bangladesh has purchased 25,000 tonnes of sugar from Pakistan. The shipment is expected to arrive at Chittagong port from Karachi port.
