Bihar will soon emerge major sugar producer in the country, says Mangal Pandey
Bihar plans to establish 25 modern sugar mills and revive closed units under the “Saat Nischay-3” programme to boost sugarcane farmers’ income and rural employment. The initiative aims to restore Bihar’s sugar industry, create over 125,000 jobs and strengthen infrastructure in key sugarcane-growing regions.
Patna: Senior BJP leader and former Health Minister Mangal Pandey has said that the Bihar government has launched a major push to revive the state’s sugar industry with plans to establish 25 modern sugar mills and restart long-closed units to boost farmers’ income and strengthen the rural economy.
Pandey said the initiative, being implemented under the “Saat Nischay-3” programme under the leadership of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, is aimed at transforming the future of sugarcane farmers in Bihar and restoring the state’s position in the sugar sector, Live Cities reported.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on behalf of farmers, stating that the move supports the vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, farmer welfare and the goal of a developed India by 2047.
Pandey said Bihar was once the country’s largest sugar-producing state, with sugar mills in Motihari, Lauria, Sugauli, Riga, Majhaulia and Sasamusa known across the country. However, he alleged that after 1990, anti-farmer policies and corruption led to the closure of 28 sugar mills, leaving lakhs of families unemployed.
He said sugarcane farmers were eventually forced to transport their produce to mills in Uttar Pradesh and other states, while traditional sugarcane-growing regions such as West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi and Siwan witnessed economic decline.
According to Pandey, the new plan will provide farmers with better prices for their sugarcane while creating employment opportunities for more than 1.25 lakh youth within their own villages and towns.
He said the project is also expected to reduce migration and improve rural infrastructure, including roads, electricity, warehouses and cold storage facilities, in sugarcane-producing regions.
Pandey added that the initiative would help revive the entire sugarcane belt in Bihar and bring fresh momentum to the rural economy.
