Cane crushing in Baghpat likely to extend till April end
Baghpat: Sugarcane crushing in the district is likely to extend till April end as around 58 lakh quintal sugarcane is yet to be harvested, reports Amar Ujala.
Farmers are facing problems in harvesting cane due to the scorching heat as the summer season has begun. Apart from this, the harvesting of wheat crops has also affected cane harvesting in the district.
Three sugar mills in the district have so far crushed 216 lakh quintals of sugarcane and are yet to crush 58 lakh quintals.
“Summer season has begun and the wheat crop has also become ready to be harvested. This is affecting cane-crushing activities in our fields,” said a farmer from the region.
Apart from this farmers are facing problems in getting their cane dues from the sugar mills. Ramala sugar mill and Baghpat Sugar mill together have paid more than Rs 212 crore to the cane farmers for the ongoing crushing season.
Dr Anil Kumar Bharati, district cane officer said that the sugar mills in the district will extend their crushing operations this season as there is excess cane standing in the fields. The mills will close operations only after crushing all the cane grown in the district.”
