Ethanol supplies cross 615 cr ltrs in ESY 2025-26; Grain-based production continues to lead

India’s ethanol blending programme supplied about 615 crore litres by May 31, 2026, achieving 71% of the contracted 862 crore litres for ESY 2025–26. Maize-based ethanol was the largest contributor, while sugar-based feedstocks recorded a higher contract fulfilment rate of 76%, supporting continued growth in ethanol blending.

India’s ethanol blending programme continues to gather momentum, with cumulative ethanol supplies reaching about 615 crore litres as of May 31, 2026, accounting for about 71% of the contracted volume of 862 crore litres for the ongoing Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025-26.

Grain-based ethanol accounted for the largest share of supplies during the first seven months of the ethanol year.

Ethanol produced from maize emerged as the single largest contributor, supplying about 225 crore litres, representing about 75% of its contracted quantity of 301 crore litres.

Supplies from surplus food grains (SFG) reached about 146 crore litres, achieving 63% of contracted volumes, while ethanol from damaged food grains (DFG) stood at about 34 crore litres, translating into 64% contract fulfilment.

Collectively, grain-based distilleries supplied about 405 crore litres, or nearly 69% of their contracted volume, reinforcing their position as the primary supplier to oil marketing companies.

Among sugar-based feedstocks, sugarcane juice (SCJ) supplied about 138 crore litres of ethanol, equivalent to about 85% of the contracted volume of 162 crore litres.

Meanwhile, ethanol derived from B-heavy molasses (BHM) reached about 63 crore litres, accounting for about 65% of contracted quantities, while C-heavy molasses (CHM) contributed about 9 crore litres, achieving 56% fulfilment.

Overall, sugar-based feedstocks supplied approximately 210 crore litres, representing 76% of contracted volumes, a higher fulfilment rate than the grain segment.

Monthly ethanol supplies remained relatively stable throughout the period. Deliveries increased from about 36 crore litres in November 2025 to a peak of about 102 crore litres in December 2025, before moderating to around 90-100 crore litres per month in subsequent months.
