Grain production record expected in India

India’s grain production for MY 2025-26 is estimated at a record 376.6 million tonnes, driven by record rice, wheat and corn harvests. Corn output is forecast to jump 27% to 55.09 million tonnes, boosting exports to 2.4 million tonnes, while wheat exports could rise from 237,000 tonnes this year to 2 million tonnes in 2026-27.

Grain production in India for the 2025-26 marketing year is estimated at a record 376.6 million tonnes, as new highs in output are expected in rice, wheat and corn, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.

“Timely, adequate and well distributed 2025 monsoon and generally favorable weather conditions across the country during the crop year supported higher planting and yields,” the FAS said.

Most notably, corn production is estimated to increase by an “unprecedented” 27% year on year to a record 55.09 million tonnes. Rice and wheat output are expected to increase by 4 million tonnes, to 154 million and 117 million, respectively, the FAS said.

India, which historically restricts grain exports when food security is threatened but now has adequate stocks, is projected to export 2.4 million tonnes of corn this marketing year, quadrupling the total from the 2024-25 season, the FAS said. It noted that corn prices have been on a downward trend since the second quarter of 2026, which is driving higher domestic consumption and more export demand.

Meanwhile, wheat exports are estimated to increase slightly to 237,000 tonnes this year but are then forecast to soar to 2 million tonnes in 2026-27.

“Despite the Indian wheat prices not currently being competitive, expected steady prices are likely to support exports to neighboring Nepal, Bhutan and possible Sri Lanka and south Asian markets,” the FAS said.
