Indonesia to expand high-yield rice seeds nationwide
Indonesia plans to expand high-yield rice seeds from its Subang BRMP Padi center nationwide, with varieties producing 10–13 tonnes per hectare. The center produces 250 tonnes annually. The government will subsidize seeds for at least 1 million hectares next year to promote modern farming and raise productivity.
Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said high yield rice seeds produced by the Indonesian Center for Rice Agricultural Modernization (BRMP Padi) in Subang District, West Java, could produce yields of 10-13 tons per hectare.
“We will expand their use on a massive scale throughout Indonesia,” Amran said during an inspection of rice seed production at the BRMP Padi facility on Wednesday.
According to Amran, the seed center in Subang is the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, with annual production reaching 250 tons.
Amran said rice varieties produced by BRMP Padi could achieve yields of 10-13 tons per hectare and should continue to be developed to help maintain national food security.
“We must take good care of this. This is the largest rice seed center in Southeast Asia. We must protect and oversee it. The yields can reach 10 to 13 tons,” he said.
According to Amran, the center produces various types of rice seeds suited to different conditions, including the rainy and dry seasons, as well as drought-tolerant varieties.
The Ministry of Agriculture earlier announced plans to allocate subsidized rice seeds for at least 1 million hectares of farmland next year to increase rice productivity and encourage farmers to adopt modern agriculture to advanced agricultural systems (PM-AAS).
“Next year, we will allocate a budget for seeds covering at least 1 million hectares,” Amran said.
He said the rice seed subsidy was aimed at encouraging farmers to adopt PM-AAS, which has been shown to increase productivity to 11-12 tons per hectare from the previous 5-6tons per hectare.
Amran said providing seeds for 1 million hectares and implementing modern farming methods would help improve the welfare of Indonesian farmers.
