Tripura exports first consignment of organic rice to European market
Tripura exported its first consignment of certified organic aromatic rice to Europe, totaling 18.7 MT across four varieties, including black and Harinarayan rice. The state has 26,600 hectares under organic farming, while 53 Farmer Producer Companies support farmers. The government aims to expand international markets and modernize certification.
Tripura has recorded a significant achievement in organic agriculture with the export of its first consignment of certified organic aromatic rice to the European market.
A total of 18.7 metric tonnes of organic rice, comprising four varieties, was exported by Pratithi Organic Foods Pvt. Ltd.
The consignment includes 1.2 MT of Kalikhasa rice, 1.5 MT of sticky rice, 6 MT of black rice and 10 MT of Harinarayan rice.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath flagged off the consignment on Wednesday during a Sensitization Programme on the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) held at Pragna Bhaban in Agartala.
Addressing the programme, Nath said the export marked an important milestone in the state’s efforts to connect farmers with international markets.
He said, “This gathering marks a significant milestone in strengthening Tripura’s organic agriculture ecosystem and connecting our farmers with global markets. Blessed with fertile soil, abundant rainfall, and rich biodiversity, Tripura holds immense potential in organic farming.”
Nath said farmers in Tripura have traditionally followed sustainable practices such as crop rotation, mixed farming and the use of organic compost.
These practices, he added, are now being supported by modern certification systems to meet international quality standards.
According to the minister, the state’s agricultural products have already gained markets both within India and overseas.
Aromatic rice, ginger, scented lemon, bird’s eye chilli and the GI-tagged Queen Pineapple have reached several Indian cities and international markets, including Germany, the UAE, Oman and Bangladesh, he said.
At present, around 26,600 hectares have been brought under the organic farming framework in Tripura.
Of this, 14,411 hectares are registered, while 2,002 hectares are under conversion and another 10,189 hectares are under consideration.
The state has also established 53 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) to promote collective farming, strengthen marketing and provide farmers with better access to business opportunities.
