Karnataka BJP hails Centre’s sugarcane FRP hike to Rs 365 per quintal, slams state govt over pending dues
Karnataka BJP leader R. Ashoka welcomed the Centre’s hike in sugarcane FRP to ₹365/quintal for 2026-27, saying it would benefit 8–10 lakh state farmers. He also accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of failing to clear promised sugarcane dues and incentives to growers.
Karnataka’s Leader of the Opposition, R. Ashoka, on Wednesday welcomed the Union Cabinet’s decision to raise the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane to Rs 365 per quintal for the 2026-27 season, while using the occasion to level sharp criticism at the Congress-led state government for failing to clear dues owed to sugarcane growers, IANS reported.
Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi said the Cabinet had approved the revised FRP based on a recovery rate of 10.25 per cent. He added that an additional incentive of Rs 3.56 per quintal would be paid for every 0.1 per cent increase in recovery above that level. Where the recovery rate is at or below 9.5 per cent, farmers will receive a minimum of Rs 338.3 per quintal with no deduction applied.
Joshi said the decision was expected to benefit between 8 and 10 lakh sugarcane farmers in Karnataka and nearly 5 crore farmers and their families across the country. The move would also support over 5 lakh workers employed in the sugar industry, he added.
Ashoka meanwhile trained his fire on the Siddaramaiah-led state government, alleging it had broken its commitments to cane growers. He said the government had assured an additional Rs 100 per quintal for sugarcane last year but had paid neither its own share of Rs 50 nor ensured that sugar mills released the remaining Rs 50.
Accusing the state of following an anti-farmer policy and making empty promises, Ashoka said the Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been consistently working to raise farmers’ incomes, in contrast to what he described as sustained inaction at the state level.
The increase in FRP reflects the Centre’s stated commitment to strengthening both the farming sector and the sugar industry, according to the minister.
