Panipat sugar mill to set up Haryana’s largest ethanol plant with Rs 200 crore investment
Panipat Sugar Mill will invest ₹200 crore to build Haryana’s largest grain-based ethanol plant with 90,000 litres/day capacity on 10.7 acres. Using maize, rice, pearl millet and molasses, it will supply IOC and others, employ zero-liquid-discharge technology, and be completed within 15 months.
Panipat: Panipat Sugar Mill is set to establish a new ethanol plant with a production capacity of 90,000 litres per day, making it the largest ethanol facility in Haryana. The project is expected to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore and is scheduled for completion within the next 15 months.
The grain-based plant will supply ethanol to Indian Oil Corporation’s Panipat Refinery as well as other oil marketing companies. Designed with zero liquid discharge technology, the facility aims to minimize environmental impact by ensuring that no liquid waste is released outside the plant, Amar Ujala reported.
The mill management has completed preparations for the tender process, which is expected to be issued this week. Once the work order is awarded, the plant is planned to become operational within 15 months.
The ethanol facility will be constructed on 10.7 acres of land. Local authorities have already prepared the project proposal, which will now be forwarded to the High Purchase Committee for approval and finalization of the contractor and rates.
The plant will use rice, maize, pearl millet and sugarcane molasses as raw materials. During the sugar mill’s off-season, maize, rice and pearl millet will be processed for ethanol production, while sugarcane molasses will be used during the crushing season.
Ethanol, a biofuel blended with petrol, has become an important component of India’s fuel-mixing programme. The proposed facility is expected to strengthen ethanol supplies while promoting environmentally sustainable production practices.
At present, the largest ethanol plant in the state is located at Shahabad Sugar Mill in Kurukshetra district, with a capacity of 60,000 litres per day. The new Panipat project will surpass that capacity and become the biggest ethanol-producing unit in Haryana.
The announcement comes on the back of a strong performance by Panipat Sugar Mill. During the latest season, the mill sold 60,000 quintals of molasses at Rs 1,625 per quintal, generating nearly Rs 10.70 crore in revenue.
The mill also recorded the highest sugarcane crushing among Haryana’s 11 sugar mills, including 10 cooperative mills and one Hafed-run unit, processing 38.41 lakh quintals of sugarcane during the season.
In addition, the mill exported 2.82 crore units of electricity, earning revenue of Rs 17.85 crore.
Navdeep Nain, Managing Director of the Panipat Cooperative Sugar Mill, said the tender for the ethanol project would be floated shortly. He added that the grain-based facility would be the highest-capacity ethanol plant in the state and would supply ethanol to Indian Oil Corporation and other oil companies.
