Parliamentary committee reviews edible oil sector to boost domestic production
A parliamentary committee led by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi reviewed India’s edible oil industry, focusing on boosting domestic production, reducing import dependence and supporting farmers. The committee received ministry inputs and will submit recommendations to Parliament on achieving greater self-sufficiency in edible oils.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution conducted a detailed review of the edible oil industry on Monday, focusing on measures to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
Chaired by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, the meeting examined policy initiatives aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in edible oil production and enhancing support for farmers.
The agenda included a briefing from representatives of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (Department of Food and Public Distribution) on the topic ‘Edible Oil Industry: A Review’.
Kanimozhi described the discussion as significant, stating, “It was a very important discussion. We had asked the relevant departments to give us information on what they are planning to do so that we become self-sufficient and how they are supporting the farmers.”
She added that the committee has received inputs from the concerned ministries and will submit its findings to Parliament: “We have got a report from them, which we will be submitting to Parliament.”
Separately, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture held discussions on the impact of West Asia geopolitical developments on India’s road infrastructure sector at the Parliament House Annexe Extension (PHAE).
The meeting was chaired by Janata Dal (United) National Working President and Chairperson of the committee, Sanjay Kumar Jha.
The committee engaged with the Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, on the subject, “Impact of Geopolitical Developments in West Asia on India’s Road Infrastructure Sector.”
Additionally, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel is scheduled to meet later in the day at the Parliament House Annexe (PHA).
The committee will take oral evidence from representatives of the Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Power, and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change regarding the subject, “Coal Block Auction and Allocation Process – A Review.”
