Taunton specialist poultry farm refurbishes biomass boiler
Newport Manor Farms near Taunton has refurbished its biomass boiler with financial support from Ignition, a Cornwall-based asset finance provider. The farm, which houses 23,000 Oakham broiler chickens supplied to Marks and Spencer, benefits from a drier heat that enhances animal welfare and reduces environmental impact. The refurbishment follows previous collaboration with Ignition for solar panel installation
A farm near Taunton has recently refurbished its biomass boiler, thanks to support from a Cornwall-based company.
Ignition, a Truro-based asset finance provider, assisted Newport Manor Farms, a specialist poultry business that houses 23,000 Oakham broiler chickens. These chickens are supplied to Marks and Spencer through Hood 2 Sisters and meet the standards of the Better Chicken Commitment, which ensures they are fed a multigrain diet and given more space, pecking aids, and perches to encourage natural behaviors.
The birds benefit from the drier heat provided by a wood chip biomass boiler, originally installed ten years ago.
Rebecca Horsington, who runs Newport Manor Farms with her husband, Simon, said, “Installing a biomass boiler was definitely the right choice. The birds prefer the drier heat, and it also reduces our environmental impact as a business.”
She added, “We’ve continued to benefit from payments through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, but after 10 years, the system needed an update. Ignition offered to help us finance the refurbishment.”
This is the second time Newport Manor Farms has worked with Ignition, following the installation of solar panels on the broiler house last summer. “We’ve been really impressed with the service both times,” said Rebecca. “The team is friendly and approachable, and the entire process has been smooth and straightforward.”
Ignition provides financial support to businesses for a range of assets, including vehicles, machinery, business equipment, and renewable energy systems. It helped Newport Manor Farms with a hire purchase agreement to spread the cost of updating and refurbishing the boiler’s pipework and pumps.
Eleanor Smith from Ignition said, “It was a pleasure to assist Rebecca and Simon with financing their solar energy system last year, and again with the biomass boiler refurbishment this year. These efforts showcase Newport Manor Farms’ long-term commitment to animal welfare and reducing its environmental footprint.”
