Uttar Pradesh ethanol output rises 23% to 2.23 billion litres in 2024-25

Uttar Pradesh increased ethanol production 23% to 2.23 billion litres in 2024-25, supporting India’s 25% blending target amid energy security concerns. Sugarcane yields rose to 84 tonnes per hectare, mills’ crushing capacity reached 836,000 TCD, and renewable energy investments could touch ₹60,000 crore.

Uttar Pradesh’s ethanol production grew more than 23 per cent to 2.23 billion litres (BL) in 2024-25, up from 1.8 BL in 2023-24, underlining the state’s growing role in India’s biofuel programme, Business Standard reported.

The increase is significant as India moves to raise ethanol blending in petrol to 25 per cent from the current level of 20 per cent, a target that has gained added urgency in the context of the ongoing West Asia conflict and concerns over energy security. Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest producer of both sugarcane and ethanol, with the crop cultivated across 2.97 million hectares and supporting 4.8 million farm households in the state.

According to the report, the 20 per cent ethanol blending already achieved nationally has helped India save 45 million barrels of crude oil annually, translating into cumulative foreign exchange savings of nearly Rs 4.5 lakh crore so far.

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) in Amethi district is developing scalable technologies in renewable and green energy. RGIPT Director Harish Hirani said the institute has enhanced its biogas production capacity and is supplying biogas for practical applications.

Uttar Pradesh could attract private investment of Rs 60,000 crore in the renewable energy sector over the next five years, according to Kishor Nair, Chief Executive Officer of Avaada Energy. Nair said that geopolitical uncertainty and supply chain risks have made energy security, economic growth, and sustainability increasingly interconnected.

Sugarcane yields in the state have also improved markedly. Output per hectare has risen to 84 tonnes in 2025-26 from 72 tonnes before 2016-17, according to the report. The combined daily crushing capacity of Uttar Pradesh’s 125 operational sugar mills has increased to 836,000 tonnes crushed per day (TCD) from 750,000 TCD before 2017. More than Rs 3.20 lakh crore has been paid to sugarcane farmers in the state over the last nine years between 2017 and 2026, a senior cane department official said.

Agricultural expansion remains central to Uttar Pradesh’s stated ambition of becoming a one trillion dollar economy by 2030, as envisioned by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with sugarcane farmers increasingly adopting modern technologies and improved seed varieties to raise output.
