India’s first integrated 1G-2G bio-ethanol refinery to be inaugurated in Odisha on July 4
India is set to transform its biofuel landscape with the launch of its first integrated 1G and 2G bioethanol refinery in Odisha. The pioneering facility will convert crop residues into clean fuel, boosting ethanol production, reducing stubble burning, enhancing energy security, and accelerating the nation’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
India is set to take a major step towards cleaner transportation fuels and improved energy security with the inauguration of the country’s first integrated first-generation (1G) and second-generation (2G) bio-ethanol refinery in Odisha’s Bargarh district on July 4.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Rs 1,775 crore refinery, which has an annual ethanol production capacity of 6.3 crore litres, Business Standard reported.
The project is expected to strengthen India’s biofuel programme while promoting the conversion of agricultural waste into green fuel.
The refinery has been developed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited under the Pradhan Mantri Jaiv Indhan-Vatavaran Anukool Fasal Awashesh Nivaran (JI-VAN) Yojana. It is the first commercial facility in the country to integrate first-generation and second-generation ethanol production.
The plant will also be the first in India to commercially produce second-generation ethanol using paddy straw and other lignocellulosic agricultural residues, marking a key milestone in the country’s efforts to expand sustainable biofuel production.
