Swedish agricultural cooperative to establish Lantmännen Biogas

Swedish agricultural cooperative Lantmännen has launched Lantmännen Biogas, focusing on biogas as a key growth area. By using organic residual streams from its own operations, the company aims to produce sustainable biofuels and enhance circular flows. Lantmännen’s energy division sees significant potential in biogas, further optimizing production processes. The initiative also supports renewable energy demands and agriculture, as biofertilizer is produced in the process, benefiting Swedish farms. This aligns with the cooperative’s commitment to sustainability from “field to fork.”

Swedish agricultural cooperative Lantmännen has announced the launch of Lantmännen Biogas, recognizing biogas as a key growth opportunity. The cooperative plans to utilize organic residual streams from its own operations to maximize their value as raw materials for biogas production, reported Bioenergy Insight.

Focusing on resource efficiency and sustainability, Lantmännen currently transforms grain and circular residues from the food industry into sustainable biofuels, green chemicals, and raw materials for feed and food production. The company views the expansion into biogas as a natural progression of its existing operations, aligning with its objective to enhance circular flows throughout the value chain from field to fork.

Lars-Gunnar Edh, head of Lantmännen’s energy division, stated, “We see significant potential in biogas and will continue to explore development opportunities in this area. By investing in biogas, we can further optimize the use of residual streams from our own production and reinforce our circular business model.”

Magnus Kagevik, president and CEO of Lantmännen, added, “With a substantial raw material base, we are well-positioned to be a reliable partner in meeting the growing demand for renewable and fossil-free energy in the gas market. Additionally, the process produces biofertilizer, which can be used in agriculture, creating further value for our owners’ farms and for Swedish agriculture as a whole.”
